Background of the Study
Hashtag campaigns on Twitter have become central to political mobilization in Nigeria, profoundly influencing semantic domains within digital discourse. This study examines how political hashtag campaigns lead to shifts in word meanings, thereby reconfiguring semantic fields to reflect contemporary social and political realities (Nwachukwu, 2023). As political movements gain traction on Twitter, users coin and repurpose hashtags that encapsulate complex ideas, emotions, and calls for action. These hashtag campaigns facilitate semantic innovation by compressing detailed political commentary into succinct, memorable phrases that resonate with large audiences. The rapid spread of these hashtags, enabled by Twitter’s viral nature, accelerates the redefinition of semantic domains, affecting how terms are understood and employed in everyday conversation. The study analyzes the processes of semantic shift, including lexical borrowing, blending, and recontextualization, as they occur within political discourse. By focusing on a range of political hashtag campaigns, the research aims to provide insights into how digital activism drives language change and influences public perceptions of political issues (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the evident role of hashtag campaigns in shaping semantic domains, there is limited systematic research on how political movements on Twitter drive semantic shifts in Nigerian discourse. The dynamic nature of digital activism complicates the tracking of these changes, and existing studies have not sufficiently addressed the mechanisms underlying semantic reconfiguration. This research gap restricts our ability to understand the broader impact of digital activism on language, particularly in the political arena. Addressing this issue is crucial for developing theoretical models that capture the interplay between online activism and semantic evolution (Ibrahim, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To analyze semantic shifts induced by political hashtag campaigns on Twitter.
To identify mechanisms driving these semantic changes.
To assess the broader impact on Nigerian political discourse.
Research Questions
What semantic shifts are observed in political hashtag campaigns?
How do these campaigns drive lexical redefinition?
What are the implications for political discourse in Nigeria?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it elucidates the impact of hashtag campaigns on semantic evolution in Nigerian political discourse. By examining Twitter political movements, it provides valuable insights into how digital activism reshapes meaning and influences public opinion. The findings will benefit linguists, political scientists, and communication practitioners by offering a deeper understanding of the interplay between language and digital activism (Chukwu, 2023).
